An English Cream dachshund can range in color from golden to a yellowish white. They will always have black noses, black eye liner, and black or self colored nails. In the case of dominant red dachshunds true english cream puppies are born very dark in color. Over the first 6 to 8 weeks, the cream color emerges form the undercoat overtaking the intital black coat. The dachshunds that lose almost all of their black overlay are called English Cream. Others that retain a great deal of their black overlay are called Shaded English Creams. In the case of recessive red dachshunds true English Cream puppies are born very light in color. The older the puppies get the lighter in color they become. These buff color dachshunds are called Clear English cream. True English Cream dachshunds can be traced back to United Kingdom ancestry.
Sometimes dachshunds are called cream but are actually dilute red. These dachshunds look almost solid white when they are newborns. Over the first 6 to 8 weeks their color darkens slowly, becoming more and more red. Their noses and nails are blue in color and if they retain any overlay it also will be blue.
